Eating out without going off plan: 7 choices that save the day

Restaurant, fast food or buffet: what to do before, during and after to stay within your budget.

· 3 min read

Eating out doesn't have to be the end of your plan. With a few simple choices, you can enjoy the evening and stay within your budget for the day.

Before you go

  1. Don't arrive starving. Skipping lunch "to save room" usually makes you eat twice as much at night.
  2. Look at the menu ahead of time. Deciding at home, calmly, is easier than deciding while hungry with the kitchen smells around you.

At the table

  1. Start with protein and salad. They fill you up and leave less room for the rest.
  2. Ask for sauce on the side. That way you decide how much to use.
  3. Pick just one "extra". Starter, dessert or drink: choose one and enjoy it guilt-free.
  4. Share the main course when the portion is big.

Afterwards

  1. Log what you ate, even if it went over budget. The next day goes back to normal, and the log shows that one meal doesn't change the week.
One meal off plan doesn't ruin the month. What ruins it is turning it into a whole week of "might as well".
