Not every urge to eat is hunger. Telling them apart is half the work of losing weight, because each one calls for a different response.
What physical hunger usually feels like
- It builds slowly, hours after your last meal.
- It accepts many foods: a plate of real food solves it.
- It shows up in your body: a growling stomach, low energy, trouble focusing.
- It goes away when you eat and leaves no guilt.
What a craving usually feels like
- It hits suddenly, often right after eating.
- It asks for one specific food: sweets, chips, pizza.
- It comes with boredom, tiredness, stress or a situation (the couch, your phone, the end of the workday).
- It comes in a wave and, if you wait, usually fades in 10 to 15 minutes.
The 30-second test
- When was my last meal? Less than 2 hours ago, it's probably a craving.
- Would I eat a plate of rice, beans and vegetables right now? If not, it isn't hunger.
- What happened in the last 10 minutes? An argument, boredom, an ad?
If it's hunger, eat, ideally something with protein and fiber. If it's a craving, you have options: wait for the wave to pass, drink water, leave the room or pick a swap that fits your day.
