Your kids' snacks and your diet: how to stop picking at leftovers

Leftovers on their plate, cookies from the lunchbox and movie popcorn. Strategies for losing weight with kids at home.

· 3 min read

If you have kids, you know: the biggest risk isn't your plate, it's theirs. The last bit of pasta, the cookie left in the lunchbox, the Saturday movie popcorn. Those calories vanish from memory, but not from your body.

Why it catches you so often

  • It's lots of small portions throughout the day.
  • You eat standing up, distracted, without logging.
  • Kids' food often has more sugar and refined flour.

Strategies that work

  1. Serve them smaller portions and give seconds if they ask. Less is left over.
  2. Store leftovers right away, in a container, before clearing the table.
  3. Eat with them, from your own plate, instead of "tasting" theirs.
  4. Have your own snack ready at their snack time.
  5. Brush your teeth after dinner, a signal that the kitchen is closed.

Use it to teach

Kids learn by watching. Fruit in sight, water on the table and vegetables on the family plate help you and help them. You don't need to talk about dieting with your kids: just change what's on the table.
