Logging

How to log food you cook at home

Cake, beans, lasagna: when the recipe is yours, you can find the calories per portion with a simple calculation.

· 3 min read

Home cooking is usually the best choice, but it's the hardest to log. There's no label and every home makes it differently. The solution is to calculate the recipe once and reuse it every time.

The calculation in 4 steps

  1. Add up the calories of the ingredients you used, from the labels or a food table. Don't forget the oil.
  2. Weigh the finished pot or pan, subtracting its empty weight.
  3. Divide the calories by the total weight and you have the calories per gram.
  4. Weigh your portion and multiply.

Without a scale

Split the recipe into equal portions. If the cake makes 12 slices and the recipe has 3,000 kcal, each slice has about 250 kcal.

Do it once, use it forever

Beans, rice, tomato sauce and your usual cake come back every week. Calculate your home's regular recipes and you won't have to think about them again.

When in doubt, round up

Nobody needs the exact calorie. Erring a little on the high side protects your day.

In BoraLog your portion as a custom item with the calories you calculated. After that it comes back from recent items with one tap.
