How your calorie budget is calculated

The formula, the deficit and the safety floor behind the number on the Today screen.

  1. Resting energy: calculated with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, using your weight, height, age and sex.
  2. Daily energy: resting energy multiplied by your routine factor, from sedentary to very active.
  3. Deficit: the app subtracts the calories that match the pace you chose.
  4. Floor: the budget never goes below 1,200 kcal for women and 1,500 kcal for men.

The result is the number on the Today screen. As your weight drops, the math is redone and the budget follows.

When the plan corrects itself

The formula is an estimate. So after two weigh-ins and two weeks, the app compares your real loss with the promised one and adjusts the budget if needed. See Weekly weigh-in and goal curve.

In your profile, under Body & metabolism, the How we calculate your target button shows the scientific sources behind the math.
